Happy Hanukkah!

Facts about Hanukkah.

Date: Dec 2, 2018 – Dec 10, 2018
Also called: Festival of Lights, Festival of Dedication

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire.

Hanukkah is celebrated around the world for eight days and nights. Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees or Israelites over the Greek-Syrian ruler, Antiochus about 2200 years ago. A Menorah is a special nine-branched candelabrum, also known in Hebrew as a Hanukiah.

This discussion made me recall that I once had a "Shabbat" dinner with some Jewish friends. It was a wonderful experience.

I also had to hunt all over Las Vegas for a kosher restaurant once for the same friends. I was not impressed with the food, but it was just a bad restaurant. Kosher food is the pretty much the same, just processed differently. They are required to kill animals humanely and they are very careful about cross-contamination and other requirements.

"According to the laws of the Torah, to be eaten, a kosher species must be slaughtered by a "Schochet," a ritual slaughterer. Since Jewish Law prohibits causing any pain to animals, the slaughtering has to be effected in such a way that unconsciousness is instantaneous and death occurs almost instantaneously."
