My friend's house burned down yesterday. She and her husband escaped with only the clothes on their backs. Although they have insurance, it's still a devastating loss. I am more thankful for everything and everyone today.

OMG, so sorry to hear that TDAT. It must be awful to lose all their family heirlooms, photos and so forth. But, thank God they all survived.

I am sorry if I already posted but reading the above has inspired me to share....
Though I am an only child, and also have no children, I have a wonderful husband. Unfortunately he is much older than me which I worry about every day. I have very little family. Also as my parents had me late. My dad was the youngest of 5 so all that family is gone. My mom was an only child so there is no family on her side. And of course both my parents are already gone.
I am lucky enough to have 3 cousins that I have become very close to in the last few years. After attending a funeral we all realized that we are the only family we all have. We now make it a point to get together every couple of months. Though I have always liked to stay home and cook for Thanksgiving, for the second year we are going to spend it with my cousins. I have to say as I have gotten older I have changed. I realize how important my little family is and how I am blessed...not with quantity but with quality.
Enjoy every day....it is a gift

Cora you and I have alot in common , I was a only child as well , I have 4 children and 10 grandchildren . I am blessed that I never had any one of them with drug or alchol problems , never had to pull them out of jail. All four are responcible parents. I will be 65 in January , I know how you feel .. Wishing you continued health and happiness friend! BTW I have 7 grandsons and 3 granddaughters .
lundemar what a wonderful family you have! After being an only child, all of a sudden you have a lot of companionship! How exciting! Blessings to you and to yours!

I am so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how painful it would be to lose everything. I try not to be overly attached to possessions, but I think our homes and things add stability amid the chaos and impermanence of life.

RGALP, Thanks so much for sharing that. Some members of my family can be exasperating at times and your post makes me appreciate them a little more.

Sorry to hear about your friends, TDTAT! Thankfully they are ok, but it's still devastating to go through something like that

We all have so many things to be thankful for, and we often forget, just how blessed we are!
