If you are looking for reliability, the odds say buy a Toyota or Honda. You are in Canada, so maybe a Subaru would be the way to go for 4-wheel drive. My aunt and uncle had subarus that lasted 15+ years!
Check consumer reports for car reviews! In my area you can get to their website free from the library. It would even be worth paying for a month to check the lists as they test all the cars independently. I use consumer reports for reviews before buying anything major.
